Zwei großartige Interpreten

June 16, 2014 -

Rachlin opens the Philadelphia Orchestra 2011-12 season

15 October 2011

Philadelphia Orchestra shines in season's second concert

By David Patrick Stearns
Inquirer Classical Music Critic

Let's not be too concerned that listeners seemed to stay away in droves from the Thursday concert/gala opening of the Philadelphia Orchestra's 112th season.

Such events are crucial for fund-raising and community visibility, but the real opening was the Prokofiev/Sibelius/Beethoven program Friday afternoon at the Kimmel Center's Verizon Hall, which was three-quarters full and populated by listeners inclined to give the orchestra a whooping, hollering hero's welcome.

The orchestra's playing was excellent and guest violinist Julian Rachlin went beyond even that. But one's ears couldn't escape the circumstances. You listened in the spirit of a war veteran at a peace treaty. Any serious music lover has felt the agony of the orchestra's bankruptcy and the Kimmel Center's labor issues. In that light, the orchestra emerged as a collection of individuals more than a monolithic purveyor of the Philadelphia sound.

Incidental solos in Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 felt like old friends saying "hello." Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1 ("Classical"), the one holdover from the Thursday opening, was brimming with witty details popping out of the orchestra's side doors. The kind of precise, subtle sound imagination that chief conductor Charles Dutoit brought to the Sibelius Violin Concerto is what really makes the orchestra world class, and what left Europe wowed in the summer festivals tour.

Many play Sibelius with the smoothness of an ice cap viewed from afar. But in real life, such terrain is craggy and primal, which was the Rachlin/Dutoit view. The opening seconds felt hushed, distant, and incredibly mysterious. Rachlin used almost no vibrato, as if to suggest a folk fiddler lost in the tundra.

He could be accused of splintering many of his phrases, but the music can take it and it wasn't just a matter of parceling out the notes in unconventional ways. Every musical paragraph had its own coloring. Every melodic permutation had its own kind of internal obstacles. No other live performance I've heard was so personal and original - at least in the first movement. Though the second and third movements didn't maintain that pitch of inspiration, the first movement alone made the concert a reference point in one's history with the piece.
